Fisher Investments Offers Course at UC Berkeley

"Practical Topics in Investment Management" teaches students real-world portfolio management techniques
Fisher Investments is offering its Practical Topics in Investment Management course to students of UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business for the fourth straight year. The course aims to teach students the basics of portfolio management—how the investment process works, market forecasting techniques, securities analysis and trading—all within the context of real world applicability.

The course is taught by Fisher Investments Research Manager Michael Hanson, the author of five books, including 20/20 Money. “We are committed to bettering the investment universe by creating knowledge and educating investors and the general public,” says Hanson. “Our UC Berkeley course is just another means for us to do that, while providing students with real world insight into the investment management process.” Hanson is also a managing editor and columnist at MarketMinder.com and publishes his own blog, Investing IQ.

The first seven weeks of class provide history, context and analysis of the current investment landscape as well as key issues facing investors and money managers. The remaining eight weeks are used as a workshop for students to develop their own investing memorandum using the top-down investing method—including selecting a benchmark, making a market forecast, determining asset allocation, developing portfolio themes and conducting a full security analysis.

In addition to attending formal lectures and engaging with regular guest speakers, students will:

Participate in a semester-long project to create and manage their own hypothetical stock portfolio using a top-down investing philosophy.
Learn the fundamentals of formulating investment objectives, establishing an investment policy, performing investment-related calculations, and applying portfolio management techniques.
Discuss and debate current events and how they might affect capital markets.
Gain understanding of today’s investing landscape and the challenges investors face.

Students interested in the course can find out more information on the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business website.
